Condensation problem - How do we solve it?
25.01.2022

If we asked several homeowners what are the most unpleasant phenomena that occur in their home in the cold season, condensation would certainly be the first to be mentioned. Although the effects of condensation are visible (from affecting the health of those in the home and reducing comfort, to the appearance of mold on various areas of the house), the factors that lead to its appearance are not so well known. Have you ever wondered how condensation occurs? I definitely did. ⁇

In today's real estate blog article, the factors that favor the creation of condensation and some effective methods of avoidance are presented.

There were probably many mornings in the cold season, when you found the steamy windows or the walls of the rooms damp. In fact, that means condensation. A theoretical explanation is that air absorbs various amounts of water vapor and for this reason, the warmer the air, the higher the amount of water vapor. Thus, when the humidity of the air in the rooms reaches near saturation, it no longer manages to retain water vapor and condensation occurs.
It appears in the area of windows and external walls because these are the colder areas compared to the air inside.

Some of the factors that lead to condensation
• high humidity inside and outside the building, for a longer period of time;
• lack of daily ventilation of the rooms;
• much lower outside temperature;
• unheated rooms properly;
• thick curtains can be a barrier to hot air;
• the sill that is fixed above the radiator, can affect the heating of the glass;
• condensation can also reach the walls if they are covered with wallpaper or other material that does not allow the optimal development of the heating circuit.

In addition to all these factors, there are several actions that you perform daily and that influence the creation of condensation, including: cooking with the door open and without the use of a hood or fan, hot showers that are not followed by ventilation of the bathroom, drying clothes. interior etc.

Now that we have established the main factors that give rise to condensation, we need to see what are the methods to avoid it.
1. Ventilation of rooms is one of the fastest and simplest ways to get rid of condensation or prevent it from occurring. Ventilating each room at least 2-3 times a day for a maximum of 20 minutes can work wonders. Regardless of the season, ventilation is required.

2. It is impossible to handle the weather outside at will, and the cold season may come with lower temperatures than you expect. In this case, the chances of condensation are high and not up to you. However, the type of windows and doors you choose matter a lot and especially their quality. If you opt for those with insulating glass and which have certain features that ensure that the optimum temperature is maintained in the home, you may not face this problem.

3. Maintaining an optimal humidity level in the house is again an efficient solution. It is recommended that this level be between 40-60% and adjust it according to the outside temperature. In other words, the lower the outside temperature, the lower the humidity level (below 30-40%).

4. Cleaning your windows is mandatory, especially in winter. It is recommended to periodically clean the exterior surface of the windows, with a special solution or an efficient, homemade solution. After washing, you can use an anti-condensation solution.
