Tradition is the key word when we talk about the small business of two Romanians from Sibiu County, who turned the furniture painted with traditional Saxon motifs into a real work of art. They have won over customers from all over the world, and now hand-painted furniture from a workshop in Transylvania can be admired in homes, but also in establishments in Germany, France or even Japan.

• Cisnădioara, the place where Saxon-inspired works of art are born
Cisnădioara is located just a few kilometers away from Sibiu, in a quiet area, like in the stories of yesteryear. The narrow streets, beautifully colored houses, buildings dating back hundreds of years, all these provide a special charm to this location. This is also where real works of art are born every day in the M’ART workshop. Many years ago, Mircea Ungurean and Oana Cerbu laid the foundations of a family business with beautiful pieces of furniture hand-painted with traditional German motifs from the Transylvania area.

Before starting this activity, the two researched and read a lot about traditional Saxon furniture. The documentation process included visits to the Astra Museum in Sibiu where they studied the pieces from the museum's patrimony, but also to the Saxon villages in Transylvania.

• Why furniture painting?
After seeing a furniture workshop of a lady of Hungarian origin who was painting the pieces with traditional Hungarian motifs, Mircea Ungurean thought of starting a similar business, highlighting the details of Saxon houses from the old days.
„Then I thought of trying to continue the old tradition of Saxon painted furniture, because my grandmother was Saxon. Seven years passed before I started, and in 2003 I practically started the business. I advertised in the newspaper and, on this occasion, I met Oana, with whom I have been collaborating ever since, and I turned this into a family business”, Mircea Ungurean told Adevărul.ro.

Their documentation paid off and with great skill and care the two turn any ordinary piece of furniture into a real work of art. The pieces that leave their workshop are gorgeous, beautifully adorned with traditional flowers from Transylvania, stylized with great taste and skill. The specialists in the workshop make furniture on a normal scale (beds, bedside tables, closets, kitchen furniture, painted doors, chairs, benches, hangers, desks, chests, children's chairs), but also small decorative objects, clocks, jewelry boxes or kitchen utensils that accessorize any home.

• The M’Art portfolio
The colors, design and symbols of the painted furniture fascinated the foreigners, so that Mircea Ungurean and Oana Cerbu have clients from all over the world. The furniture painted in Cisnădioara reached the USA, Canada, Japan, Pakistan, India, Australia, Israel, Denmark, Germany, Italy, France, Great Britain.
Their successful projects include a confectionery in Versailles, a grocery store with natural products near Munich, Germany, and a medical office in Luxembourg, all furnished in the Saxon style.

• How much does it cost and where can the artists be found?
Prices vary depending on the size of the painted pieces, the duration of the project but also the difficulty of the motifs and drawings. However, it is a wonderful and valuable investment for art and tradition lovers. Objects made with so much talent quickly find those buyers who value uniqueness and originality.
If you want to see how the wonderful objects decorated in Saxon style come to life, you can pay a visit to the M'Art workshop (Cisnădioara Nr.158, Sibiu) or you can admire some of the works at the Art Gallery in Sibiu (Martin Wankel House, Turnului St., no.6). 0722 883 602 is the telephone number where you can contact Mircea Ungurean or by e-mail at contact@mobilapictata.ro.
