Christmas in other countries - Different cultures, different traditions
22.12.2021

Traditions are part of each country's past, present and future. Some moments of the year are greeted with different traditions, and Christmas is no exception. The exchange of gifts, the decoration of the Christmas tree, the preparation of the culinary preparations, or the mulled wine with cinnamon are the symbols that the countries of the world associate with this great holiday. In the culture of many peoples, there are at least interesting traditions, and some full of humor.

Today's real estate blog article presents the special traditions of the culture of some countries.

1. Spain
According to a Spanish tradition, on December 8, the children arrange a log called "Tio de Nadal". This "Tio de Nadal" turns into a kind of pet, which the little ones have to take care of until Christmas Eve. They feed him dried fruit and make sure it is warm, covering him with a blanket. Then, on December 24, the children looked under Tio de Nadal's blanket to discover the gifts that Santa had brought.

2. Sweden
In Sweden, a well-known tradition is Yule, a goat made of straw. The tradition has its roots in an old story that says that the northern god, Thor, walks through the skies with a carriage pulled by two goats. In the 19th century, Yule goats were men in disguise who brought gifts.

3. Norway
On the night before, the Norwegians hide the adults before going to sleep because a superstition says that evil spirits and witches come to Earth to do evil. Norwegians also believe in Nisse, a dwarf who guards animals on farms in different areas. On Christmas day, the children leave a bowl of oatmeal for Nisse, if they don't want the dwarf to make jokes about them next year.

4. Ukraine
One of the least bizarre traditions of Ukrainians is to decorate the Christmas tree with spiders and artificial webs. The tradition was born from the Legend of the Christmas Spider. This told the story of a poor family who could not afford Christmas tree decorations, and the spiders decorated the Christmas tree with sails, saving them Christmas.

5. Germany
During the winter holidays, Germans usually light a candle every Sunday before Christmas, in an Advent calendar "Adventskrantz" which translates to "Coming".

6. France
The French do not start eating on Christmas Eve until a lighted candle is passed from hand to hand and reaches the youngest person at the table. In other parts of the country, people are burning a stub, superstition symbolizing well-being for the new year.

7. Iceland
Not a single Santa Claus comes to Iceland, but 13. The 13 Santa Claus are called Yule Lads and live in the mountains. They come to the city one by one, in the 13 days before Christmas and leave in the boots of the little presents if they were good or rotten tomatoes, if they were naughty.

8. Switzerland
The Swiss also enjoy a special tradition, namely: "Parade of Illuminated Radishes". In keeping with tradition, a large purple-white radish is decorated as the Halloween pumpkins are decorated. A candle is placed in the middle, the radish will be used as a lantern.
