History is a good thing that we enjoy indefinitely. We know the history of things, streets, buildings around us from the elderly, from books or from many other sources. When it comes to the history of buildings in a city, some have lost their reputation over time, but others still keep alive the image of beauty and charm of another time. Sibiu is one of the cities with the most old buildings, dating back hundreds of years, and whose details have been gradually lost.

Today's real estate article presents 5 of the oldest buildings in Sibiu and their evolution over time.

1. Sala Thalia
Before becoming the first theater in the country, Thalia Hall was called the Big Tower (16th century). The tower had a defensive role, housing a variety of weapons needed for a war. After the 18th century, when it was transformed into a theater, big names in Europe played here and many musicians crossed the threshold of the theater, including: Johan Strauss, Joseph Joachim, Franz Liszt, etc.

2. House of Arts
It is an example of the beauty and prosperous economy of yesteryear. The building was attested in 1370, and at that time it belonged to the butchers' guild. Later, it was also used by the furriers' guild. Thus, until the seventeenth century the two guilds used the house for various economic and administrative activities, and then it was transformed into an oat deposit. After 1970, it was used for the city's cultural events, events that also gave it the name of House of Arts.

3. House with Caryatids
The house was built in the 18th century and is called "La virginele de piatra" by the inhabitants of the town. What do these caryatids refer to? They represent two women standing and represent a support element. Sebastian Han, the most famous silversmith in the city, lived in this building in the past. Today, the house is used as a boarding school for German speakers in the city.

4. House of Generals
It is known as one of the largest buildings in the city center. Its name comes from the 19th century, when the arrival of several Habsburg soldiers in Sibiu was a problem from the point of view of the space of functioning and development of the military administration. After the 18th century, the Magistrate decided to build a building for the use of the General Command of the Austrian Troops in Transylvania.

5. The Blue House
The only building located in the Great Square that was not named after any owner. It has been named since 1819, due to its blue walls. The building did not have a single use over time, but several. Over the years, it has functioned as a performance hall, headquarters of the Academy of Law, restoration laboratory, etc. Currently, inside it are housed the Romanian Art Galleries of the Brukenthal Museum.
